About StandingOnShoulders.com

he site's name is derived from the famous expression attributed to Bernard of Chartres: "[He] used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size."1 This perfectly describes the sentiment I have towards those brilliant minds whose writings I have the privilege of reading as often as I please.

The theme of standing on the shoulders of giants guided the design of the website. I intended to de-emphasize my own commentary in light of the giants on whose shoulders I am standing. Thus, their insight appears in bold print on the front page in lieu of mine.

I started this site in 2009 as my latest attempt at having a website worth maintaining. I had tried micro/blogging a few times but quickly lost interest. I think, ultimately, that I don't view myself as important enough to merit having my capricious ramblings being seen as significant to the general public.

However, I read plenty of people who - in my mind - have statements and thoughts that are worth repetition and meditation. This website is an attempt at re-voicing these statements as I come across them.
